Gingivitis and Periodontitis

Posted .

Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is sometimes painless, and therefore easy to miss. However, if not treated, it can do a lot of damage to your mouth. Read on for more details concerning periodontitis.

There are many symptoms that could point to gum disease. Some of these are: easily bleeding gums, swollen, tender, red gums, gums have pulled away from teeth, persistent bad breath, loose permanent teeth, or a change in your bite pattern or denture fit. The sooner you notice gum disease, the sooner it can be treated.

Gum disease happens in stages. The first stage is called “gingivitis.” Gingivitis is able to be treated fairly simply: it can usually be reversed through a professional cleaning followed by excellent oral hygiene (twice daily brushing and daily flossing).

Advanced gum disease, or periodontitis, can lead to bone and tissue loss in your mouth. It is much more difficult to treat than the earlier stages of gum disease. If you suspect gum disease at any stage, schedule an appointment with your periodontist immediately.
